Common mistakes

  • Starting a Cyprus job without checking the newcomer exemptions. Mixing up the conditions: the 50% exemption needs 15 years of non-residence and pay over €55,000 a year. The 20% one needs at least three years of non-residence and previous employment abroad.
  • Assuming a foreign pension is taxed at the normal bands. You can choose each year between a flat 5% on amounts over €5,000 and the normal bands.
  • Treating short-term platform lets as ordinary rent. Under a Tax Department circular of 13 September 2023 they may count as business income.
  • Expecting the flat 8% rate on mined crypto. It does not apply to crypto assets acquired through mining.
