When must you register for VAT in Cyprus?

When taxable turnover passed €15,600 in the last 12 months, or is expected to pass it in the next 30 days. You also need a VAT number for most services to EU businesses. Late registration costs €85 for each month of delay, and the VAT on past sales is still due.

How often do you file VAT returns in Cyprus?

Once a quarter, with payment by the same deadline. Sales of services to EU businesses also go into a VIES report by day 15 of the next month. A late return costs €100. We file both from your books, so the figures match your accounts.

Questions

Do I need VAT for services to EU clients?

Usually yes. Services to VAT-registered EU businesses are normally taxed in the client's country under the reverse charge. You report them in your VIES return by day 15 of the following month. That needs a Cyprus VAT number; we check when you must register.

When do I need Cyprus VAT registration?

When taxable turnover is above €15,600 in the last 12 months, or is expected to pass it in the next 30 days. Below that you can register voluntarily, for example to reclaim VAT on costs.

What does late VAT registration cost?

€85 for each month of delay (VAT Law, section 45), and the VAT on sales since the date you should have registered is still due. Example: sales of €1,500 a month pass €15,600 in the 11th month (€16,500). Registering three months late costs €255 in charges, plus VAT you did not put on your invoices.

What happens if a VAT return is late?

A charge of €100 for each return the Tax Department has not received by the deadline (VAT Law, section 45).

What are the VAT rates in Cyprus?

The standard rate is 19%. Reduced rates of 9%, 5% and 3% apply only to goods and services listed in the VAT Law.
