Who fills it in

Parents or guardians registering a child for the first time at a particular public primary school or pre-primary class. The Ministry says every child who lives in Cyprus can enrol, whatever their nationality and whether or not the parents are legal residents. A child enters grade 1 if they turn 6 before 1 September of that year.

What goes with it

  • Birth certificate for a child born in Cyprus; for a child born abroad, the Alien Registration Certificate (ARC) or another official document from the country of birth. Photocopies only if certified by an official
  • Two bills that show your home address: a refuse bill and a recent electricity bill. Tenants who cannot get a refuse bill give the lease with the electricity bill
  • A copy of the page of the child's health booklet or vaccination card that shows the vaccinations and the child's name
  • A certified copy of the child's passport, if Greek is not the child's mother tongue (Part C of the form)

Common mistakes

  • Applying at a school outside your educational region. The Ministry says you first register at the school of your region, even if you then ask for a transfer on form YPAN DDE 33.
  • Missing the January registration period. After it, head teachers cannot enrol more pupils and you apply to the District Education Office.
  • Bills that do not match the address on the form. The school checks the address with a refuse bill and a recent electricity bill, or the lease.
  • Uncertified photocopies of the birth certificate or ARC. The Ministry accepts copies only if an official has certified them.
  • Forgetting the vaccination record. The school asks for a copy of the health booklet or vaccination card page with the child's name.
  • Only one parent signing in a case under Part E (a). The form says both parents must sign.

Questions

When do I register my child at a Cyprus public primary school?

In January, for the school year starting in September. The exact dates are announced in the media. Registrations are confirmed later, usually in April.

Can foreign children attend public primary school in Cyprus?

Yes. The Ministry says all children who live in Cyprus can enrol, regardless of nationality and whether the parents are legal residents. Public primary school is free and compulsory.

Which school do I apply to?

The public school of your educational region, which depends on your home address. The Ministry posts the list of regions around the end of December.

What if we arrive in Cyprus after January?

School heads cannot enrol pupils after the January period. You apply to the District Education Office, which places the child at a school with free places.

Do I need to show proof of address?

Yes. The Ministry asks for a refuse bill and a recent electricity bill, or the lease with the electricity bill if you rent. First-graders with an older sibling in grades 1–5 at the same school are accepted without proof of address.
