In short
- Rent first: most registrations need a rental contract.
- Your tax number comes after the yellow or Pink Slip: registration asks for it.
- Start the residence document first: the tax number and much else depend on it.
Week one
- Sign your rental contract (stamp duty was abolished from 1 January 2026).
- Get a local SIM card.
- File the Yellow Slip (no appointment, first come, first served) or book the permit appointment your category needs.
Weeks two and three
- Register for a tax number once you hold your registration certificate or residence permit.
- Medical tests if you need a Pink Slip.
- Apply for a bank account.
Week four
- Register with GESY and choose a doctor.
- School applications for children.
- Connect utilities in your name.
